Five Minute Friday: Surprise

Joining Kate Motaung and other members of the encouraging Five Minute Friday community, for our weekly writing adventure. To find out more about Five Minute Friday click here. This week’s prompt is “Surprise.”

Sometimes I surprise myself,
usually not in a good way.
As in my reaction (or should I say over reaction?)
to an event or someone else’s behavior.
I would like to say that I am always calm,
never knocked off balanced,
but I would be lying.

Sometimes other people surprise me
by their kindness,
their willingness to go the extra mile,
especially when they do so for persons they do not know.

I surprise myself and others surprise me.
But the One who is never surprised is our Father.
He knows all
sees all.
And there is never a time when He is wringing His hands,
holding His Head,
or saying to an angel,
Can you believe E. just did that again after I have forgiven her X number of times?”

And this trait of His, His omniscience, grounds me,
as does the fact that He is the Beginning and the End,
and sees the end from the beginning all at once,
and works all things together for my good,
and offers abounding grace,
as He patiently works on and in me transforming me into the image of His Son.

Thank You, Abba. Thank You.

  1. I love how much you fitted in here. It is encouraging that even when we surprise ourselves with our reactions to things God is not surprised and he doesn’t give up on us.

  2. Thank you for sharing this. It is such a comfort to know that what may take us by surprise, is never a surprise to God. I hope you have a lovely weekend!
