Five Minute Friday: First

Joining Kate Motaung and a community of courageous writers for the first Five Minute Friday of 2016. This week’s prompt is “First.”

Today’s prompt brought to mind lyrics from the song, “First,” sung by Lauren Daigle on her debut album, How can it be. The lyrics are a prayer that I find echoing in my heart in this moment and which I hope will characterize my life this new year.

Before I bring my need,
I will bring my heart
Before I lift my cares
I will lift my arms
I wanna know You
I wanna find You
In every season,
In very moment,
Before I bring my need
I will bring my heart
And seek You

More than anything I want
I want You first

I think of how it can be too easy to rush into His presence and blurt out my needs and I want to change that. I desire indeed, to seek Him more than I seek anything He can give me.

I also think of a song by Sara Groves, “First song that I sing,” which includes the lyrics,

In the morning when I rise
Help me to prioritize
All the thoughts that fill my day
Before my schedule tells me that my day is full
Before I’m off and on my way
I want to praise You
I need to praise you
Let the first song that I sing
Be praises to my God and King..
Before I fill my cup
I’ll lift You up

Let it be so, Father. Help me make it so.
