I am joining Kate Motaung and a group of courageous writers for Five Minute Friday. The prompt is “Try.” To learn more about Five Minute Friday (and perhaps join us?) click here.
“Keep trying.” “Don’t give up. You will get it.” We have heard these words of encouragement or variations of it throughout our lives. There are even adages based on the principle of perseverance. “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.” “You will only fail if your never try.” And perseverance is necessary in life because, while there are some accomplishments or goals which seem to require little effort, there are times when we have to persevere even when our efforts seem to bear no fruit, for months or even years.
I wonder though about the importance of knowing when to quit. A strange thought given what I have highlighted so far, but I wonder about this all the same. Yes, we are to keep trying and not easily give up but I do believe we also need to know when to quit. Stop trying. Know when we have done all we can in our own strength. Recognize that if change is going to occur, God will have to accomplish it. For example, when it comes to changing another person’s heart. That is His domain. He can use us to show His love, His compassion, His mercy. To touch lives and point others to Him. But when it comes to changing the heart, that is His domain and His alone. We cannot change others and we need to quit trying. Let Him do what only He can as we trust Him to always do what is best.
